Green Building Strategies for Growth in the Sector

With our partners at the Softwood Lumber Board and the American Wood Council, we seek to stimulate and grow the market for “mass timber construction,” by actively working to change building codes and allow for new types of construction that leverage the value of wood.

A new mass timber product called cross-laminated timber (CLT) is spurring a revolution in commercial building, allowing wood to enter markets for taller buildings that were closed to forest products in the past.

CLT is made of large, robust, engineered-wood panels that are incredibly strong, fire-resistant, and can be used as a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to concrete, masonry, and steel.

In addition to addressing the restrictive building code, the Endowment and its partners are helping companies reduce the cost of research and development to expedite and increase production and adoption of this innovative construction material.
